The California Air Resources Board (CARB) On-Road Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicle (In-Use) Regulation aims at significantly reducing diesel particulate matter (PM) and other emissions from existing on-road heavy-duty diesel vehicles operating in California.
The regulation applies to any person, business, school district, or federal government agency that owns, operates, leases or rents diesel-fueled in-use heavy-duty vehicles operating in California that have a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 14,000 pounds, yard trucks with off-road certified engines, and diesel fueled shuttle vehicles of any GVWR. Out-of-state heavy-duty diesel vehicles that operate in California are also subject to the regulation.
The regulation excludes emergency vehicles, military tactical vehicles, personal motor homes, and all on-road heavy-duty vehicles covered by other CARB regulations.
CARB mandates that all on-road heavy-duty diesel vehicles (in-use) be retrofitted, repowered, or replaced with cleaner technology and/or engines.
